I was able to attend Comic-Con in San Diego back in July for the first time in years. I got to reconnect with a lot of old friends and make a lot of new friends (Hi, everybody!). And I somehow managed to not spend a ton of money on comics, which kept my lovely wife from murdering me.
The best thing about Comic-Con is that you can pretty much do whatever you want and have a blast – as long as you’re not trying to get into the movie/TV panels (it’s not much fun waiting in line for hours). This trip was strictly business, at least during the day: I focused on meeting old friends and making professional contacts, and attending panels that would make me a better writer and publisher. (I’m still torn about whether to self-publish my own work when it’s ready – it’s still very much in progress at the moment.)
I learned that it’s important to have friends at the Con who look for fun opportunities: while I was getting my pro skillz on, my pals were getting free passes into various Con-related activities in the city. I got to take a few breaks to have fun seeing the South Park re-creation, go behind the scenes at the setup for the promotion of the new Lord of the Rings videogame, and get free pizza at a sneak peek for the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon (which I actually think I’d enjoy if I was a kid). Will try to get photos up soon. Big ups to Orion, Heather, Adam, and Sam for hooking a brother up!
Ran into old pals Shannon Stewart and Bob Schreck, whom I accompanied to Trickster across the street. Mike Allred and company’s band The Gear rocked the house for two nights, especially Saturday, when the whole room was dancing. (Editor extraordinaire Jamie S. Rich posted some photos here.)
Best memory from the con? Probably eating the amazing sandwich from the food-truck area next to South Park: the taste of a peanut butter/jelly/bacon/cream cheese/fried egg sandwich is not soon forgotten!
All in all, a fantastic trip – well worth the time and expense. Now, I just have to get this website up and running (especially since it’s on my damn business cards)…
