Honest, I really wasn’t planning on talking about Superman so much this week…
The Beat and Bleeding Cool are reporting on comics shop A Comic Conspiracy, a store in Asheboro, NC, whose owner is refusing to stock copies of Action Comics because of this panel:
He’s grunting, “GD” as he’s hit by an explosion. Or, as the owner of A Comic Conspiracy thinks, he’s taking “God’s name in vain.”
Yes, you read that right. Superman. Yeahhhh, that makes sense. Because DC Comics reeeeally wants more bad publicity about Superman this year…
Well, it’s his store; he’s entitled to sell or not sell whatever he wants. But, really, this is where he decides to take a stand? On something that, based on the comments in the articles and on the store’s Facebook page, nobody else is seeing but him?
I deal with books like “Crossed” and “The Boys”. I accepted gay characters being introduced into a children specific book like Archie Comics. I however am getting very tired of having comic writer’s liberal agendas force fed to me. Mr. Morrison has stepped over my line. If I have to stand alone on this… I will.
“Force fed”? Hm. I wasn’t aware that comics writers were forcing anyone to read anything. Or that writing characters and stories dealing with issues or various viewpoints is the same thing as promoting an agenda. Or that “GD” is Superman being anti-Christian. Well, he’s not the first person to think his personal viewpoint = The Way The World Works. It’s a shame that his customers will have to go elsewhere to buy Action Comics, which, as Rich Johnston of Bleeding Cool says, is
expected to be the best selling comic in September, and has received critical acclaim from all sides.
Almost all sides.
I’m thinking that canceling the orders on the best-selling comic book in the country is probably not a good long-term business strategy. Once his customers start buying Action somewhere else, what’s going to keep them from buying all of their comics from another seller, saving themselves time and gas money?
Wonder what the store owner thinks of Preacher.
Like I’ve said, I prefer to keep an open mind about these things…
Your thoughts, readers?

I get what the comic shop owner is saying. I don’t think it’s a bad thing and its his right to carry the comic or not based on what he likes or doesn’t like. If he doesn’t like Superman using coy words for cursing, then that’s his right.
I would rather my comic writers not use broken internet English in their comics, personally.
