Looks like Robot 6/Comic Book Resources has jumped on the story now…
And now, the retailer who thinks Superman hates God has updated his Facebook page with more:
I have to admit that the can of worms that has been opened is much larger than I ever dreamed it would be. But that’s OK. There are a lot of interesting views here mixed in among the hate. The bottom line is that nobody but Grant Morrison knows the TRUE intent behind the GD letters. This issue could be easily resolved by a simple post from either Mr. Morrison or the editors at DC Comics.
I will say that this was NOT a publicity stunt. I will be back later in the day for a final, and I do mean final, rebuttal. (Unless of course we hear from Grant or DC) As of now though, all things considered… the boycott stands.
In other words: until Grant Morrison or DC Comics tells him directly what the rest of the world knows – that Superman is not anti-Christian – he’s going to keep boycotting Action Comics, driving his customers elsewhere…
Maybe he could send a copy to Mike Meyer, the poor guy whose Superman collection was recently stolen…
UPDATE: Grant Morrison responded on DC’s site,
“It should go without saying that the offending panel and caption, a mere ‘GD’, is a sound effect grunt – to suggest Superman’s breath being forced through gritted teeth – much like ‘DHH’, ‘GNUHH’ or the many others used throughout this book and in general in the comics business. It’s not in any way representative of God or a curse.”
To which the retailer responded,
Thank you Grant Morrison. The boycott is lifted. Once again my apologies to Grant for the unwarranted name calling. Thank you to those who supported my stance. To those who didn’t… I respect your opinions. To those who only posted to bash Christians and people with opinions different from yours… grow up and get a life.
He also said this about Preacher (which, as you’ll recall, I asked about yesterday),
Preacher isn’t a main stream title like Action Comics. Plus I wasn’t the store owner at the time the Preacher books were being published. I started the shop in 1978, sold it and bought it back a little over a year ago. Stocking Preacher and Crossed were not my call at the time.
He might want to re-check the sales charts from back then; I’m pretty sure Preacher sold extremely well for DC.
I wonder if his customers are going to keep shopping with him, knowing that he could quit carrying their favorite series at a moment’s notice…
