Tom Spurgeon at The Comics Reporter has reported that writer Les Daniels, one of the great early writers of comics analysis and criticism, has passed away.
Daniels wrote the best book on the history of Marvel Comics, Marvel: Five Fabulous Decades of the World’s Greatest Comics, a massive coffee-table book that is an excellent overview of Marvel’s role in comics history. It was published at just the right time in 1991, as comics was entering an age of speculation and just before the Image exodus. It remains a definitive book on Marvel, and I consider it an essential work for any serious comics library. If you haven’t read it, you can find it really cheap online.
