ALL WEEK: The Week’s Most Popular Stories

You'll get your turn, don't worry. (Image via Wikipedia)

Once again shamelessly stealing this idea from Bleeding Cool

Based on the stories on this site so far, you’d think I was a hardcore DC fan: Not true! I AM a hardcore comics fan, but I’d say less than half of the comics I’ve held onto are from Marvel or DC. I’m just a fan of good comics, of good storytelling in our perfect medium of Words ‘n’ Pictures, and DC has been doing a lot that’s worth talking about lately: The New 52 is bringing a much-needed sales boost into many stores, which means that comics buyers are spending more and/or that lapsed DC readers are returning to comics to see if the New 52 will hold their excitement. Probably both. We’ll see if DC’s current approach (which so far hasn’t done much for me as a reader) works in the long term…

Anyway, I’ll get to Marvel, Dark Horse, Image, IDW, Boom, and all of the other fantastic (and not-so-fantastic) publishers soon – promise!

Here are the week’s most-clicked-on stories: Continue reading

WORD ‘N’ PICTURES: Electricity is Still a Mystery?!

23 Sep

A quick follow-up to Kurt Busiek’s awesome Tweet yesterday, from a 1990 faith-based “science” textbook.

Here, I’ll show it again: Continue reading

WORDS AND PICTURES: The Mystery of Electricity!

Kurt Busiek posted on Twitter today,

From a faith-based science textbook. Isn’t this useful information?

I Watched Kevin Smith’s Red State

18 Sep
Red State theatrical poster

Yes, THAT Kevin Smith.

Apparently, a double-feature out with the wife yesterday wasn’t enough movie-time for us. I learned that a double feature like Straw Dogs (2011) and The Debt isn’t the best way to walk away feeling entertained. Don’t get me wrong: both films are very good, well constructed and paced, with characters and stories that I could buy into. BUT. Both are dark movies, with dark subject matter that feels almost too revealing, too honest about the horror that people confront in the world and in themselves. Both films depict violations that are borderline traumatizing: I recommend you see them with someone you trust (you don’t want to see them alone), but no matter what, do NOT expect to get laid after watching them. (Trust me: after you see them, you’ll know why…) They are pretty great movies that are terrible date movies.

So we leave the theater, do some shopping, and think: we need some entertainment! We decide to sit on the couch and watch another movie: oh, look, we can watch Red State! Continue reading

UPDATE UPDATE: Helping a Super-Fan

So the owner of The Comic Conspiracy is done talking about the “GD” Action Comics #1 un-boycott.

A couple days ago, I asked him if he and his customers and Facebook readers would be willing to join the cause to help Mike Meyer with his stolen Superman collection. It looks like he and at least one other person are pledging books to help the cause!

The Comic Conspiracy got a lot of criticism about a boycott that many saw as a knee-jerk reaction to something that wasn’t there. But the store should be praised for its good work, as well, and I want to publicly thank everyone who’s helped Meyer.

I was torn about whether to write about this Continue reading

“GD” Superman Retailer Wants Grant Morrison’s, DC’s Attention [UPDATED]

Looks like Robot 6/Comic Book Resources has jumped on the story now…

And now, the retailer who thinks Superman hates God has updated his Facebook page with more:

I have to admit that the can of worms that has been opened is much larger than I ever dreamed it would be. But that’s OK. There are a lot of interesting views here mixed in among the hate. The bottom line is that nobody but Grant Morrison knows the TRUE intent behind the GD letters. This issue could be easily resolved by a simple post from either Mr. Morrison or the editors at DC Comics. Continue reading

Wait, Now Superman’s Anti-Christian?!

8 Sep

Honest, I really wasn’t planning on talking about Superman so much this week…

The Beat and Bleeding Cool are reporting on comics shop A Comic Conspiracy, a store in Asheboro, NC, whose owner is refusing to stock copies of Action Comics because of this panel:

Superman saying "GD" in Action Comics #1

srsly.

He’s grunting, “GD” as he’s hit by an explosion. Or, as the owner of A Comic Conspiracy thinks, he’s taking “God’s name in vain.”

Yes, you read that right. Superman. Yeahhhh, that makes sense. Because DC Comics reeeeally wants more bad publicity about Superman this year… Continue reading
