Cool Art: World’s Finest ad by Steve Rude & Karl Kesel

3 Dec

by Mike Hansen

Here’s a preliminary version of Steve Rude’s cover to World’s Finest (1990) #1. Unlike the final, painted version by Rude, this ad version is inked by Karl Kesel and traditionally colored.

To the best of my knowledge, this version has never been collected in any DC book: I know for sure it wasn’t in the original 3-issue miniseries or the recent Deluxe Edition hardcover (I’ve never owned the older trade-paperback collected edition, but I’d be surprised if this was in there).

Anyway, cool art, huh? This is pretty much exactly how Superman and Batman should look, especially in comics aimed at kids under 18. (Remember when superhero comics were aimed at kids?)

Why a sequel to Watchmen? (Answer: $$$)

Looks like it’s happening. DC’s throwing some high-level artists on Watchmen spinoff projects, and the general consensus is that it might be interesting, and that even the people who are complaining about Watchmen sequels (or prequels, or whatever, Who Cares) are gonna buy them. (I really need to find more comics to praise on this site, because it’s hard to keep up with complaining about the news coming from the comics world…)

I’m not surprised that DC is doing more Watchmen without Alan Moore; what surprises me is that it took them this long to pull the trigger. After all, Marvel didn’t touch Elektra after Frank Miller left Daredevil – until they decided they could make money off the character. Publishers that own characters will always put exploitation of their property before giving the creators the respect and control of their creations. (I wonder if Marvel’s ever going to pay Jack Kirby‘s heirs for all of the reprints of his work – not to mention all of the comics by others featuring his creations…)

The problem with sequels is that they’re rarely as interesting as the original vision, Chris Claremont’s first X-Men run notwithstanding. The more dependent a project is on previous material by other authors, the more I wonder why it even exists (from an artistic standpoint: obviously, with company-owned material, the reason is simply To Make Money).

Steve Rude Arrest Details: Help Rude Fight His Neighbors and Police

Tom Spurgeon at the Comics Reporter has learned more details of Steve Rude‘s arrest from his wife, Jaynelle (my commentary following):

* Monday night’s incident was as reported the latest development in a longstanding dispute between Rude and his neighbors. This includes the barking dogs cited in some reports. This also includes Rude stating at some point during a previous permutation of their encounters that he’d like to kill the neighbors, which was apparently enough for them to secure a restraining order.

* the incident in question from Monday night concerns the aforementioned barking dogs, which were out again where Rude could hear them as he handed out Halloween candy in costume. Rude responded to the barking dogs by throwing rocks at the fence behind which the dogs were barking in an attempt to silence them.

* one of the dog-owning neighbors confronted Rude verbally, followed by the other when the first one retreated inside. Rude says this quickly became verbally abusive, and included an invite for Steve to come over to where the second neighbor, a male, was standing. This ends with Continue reading

Steve Rude Update

Steve Rude

Steve "The Dude" Rude (Image via Wikipedia)

From his Facebook page, posted yesterday:

Steve was arrested last night. Neighbors with the barking dogs have been harassing him and finally succeeded in getting him hauled off. Trying to raise bail/legal fees and will be listing items online with buy it now prices.

donations can be sent via PayPal to steve@steverude.com or snail mail to 20783 N 83rd Ave Ste 103 PMB 191, Peoria AZ 85382 – we’d much rather people buy something though!

Thank you to everyone. We were able to make bail, but Steve won’t be released until morning. Now we have to pay for the legal counsel so he doesn’t end up back doing hard time for trying to keep his sanity. All he wants is to be left alone to create his art, not harassed by people who call the police on our kids because a frisbee ended up in their yard.

And posted less than an hour ago:

Status update: Steve is home an resting and sends his gratitude. We will be preselling the 2012 sketchbook on Kickstarter soon. In the meantime we appreciate funds coming in that can go towards our legal retainer.

Please click through to check out links to buy prints and original artwork at lowered prices, and check out his website for more.

Legal counsel is NOT cheap, and every little bit helps!

Legendary Artist Steve Rude Arrested

One of comics’ finest artists of my lifetime, Steve Rude (Nexus, World’s Finest, etc., etc.) was arrested last night and needs to raise money.

From Mark Evanier’s website:

My good friend and occasional collaborator Steve Rude was arrested last night in connection with an ongoing dispute he’d been having with some neighbors. I do not know any more about the incident than that but I do know that Steve is one of the finest artistic talents in and around the comic book community these days. I also know that in my dealings with him over many years, he has always been a man of great honesty and heart. And I further know that he has had money problems since a decision he made a few years ago. Put simply, Steve decided to not take the job offer that paid best and to instead work on projects he cared about and just kinda hope that they yielded sufficient cash to live on.

So far, they haven’t so this morning, his website announced a sale to raise money for bail and legal fees. I would hope he’s made bail by now but even if he has, there will be legal fees to pay. This means you have one of those great opportunities to simultaneously help out a deserving guy and get yourself a great bargain. Go to his website and buy something. In fact, while you’re there, buy several somethings.
